What a weird little movie. I don’t quite know what to think about it. Cruel and politically incorrect, it was the inspiration for Mean Girls, and has a harsher taste in its indictment of teenage culture that is still relevant today- and probably always will be.

It’s interesting that modern teen movies that have a ‘dark’ edge are set in dystopian times or worlds, when the same idea can work perfectly well in any time, in any reality. I’m definitely not in love with this movie- maybe because I have seen so many of its offshoots already- cliques are about as stale as you can get. But I appreciate its mission and enjoyed watching it.

And whatever happened to Christian Slater anyway? Was he ever considered a heartthrob? Because I certainly don’t see it.
